“A Dance Floor and Pianist, Al Martin, Yeahh!!!”
Al has been playing piano since 1963 and he’s been playing the organ since 1965. He began teaching both in 1967. During his career, Mr. Martin has taught at other music stores, churches, as part of after-school programs, and privately in homes.
Though he is versed in traditional teaching methods, he tends to veer from this in favor of doing what is in the best interest of the student. “I find that this style [traditional teaching] is not always in the best interest of the student.” says Al. He wants to be sure the students are engaged and have the confidence to go anywhere with and through music.
He studied music at both Pensacola State College and the Berklee College of Music. Mr. Martin has played in a variety of bands from Big Band to ensemble to solo. He is comfortable playing a wide variety of styles from classical to pop.
As a native of Pensacola, Al has worked as a product specialist for Forbes Music Co., a presenter and artist for the Kawai Corporation of America and has been a featured performer for a number of special events in the local area.
His recording credits include the Gospel group Seraphim with David Bozeman (“Tell Me Can We Make It”), Sister Eula Huff and the Huff Singers (“God’s Love Is the Best for Us”), instrumental recordings “Requestfully Yours,” “Still Yours,” “At the Social,” and “The Season of Christmas.” Other musical accomplishments include a stint in New York City serving as the music director for the off-Broadway production of Automatic Love, resident pianist for the PSW Showcase Club, and a headliner at Chillie’s. Locally, Al has participated in many community theater productions including Ain’t Misbehavin, The Wiz, Jesus Christ Superstar and Nunsense.
Many local people know Al well from the years he has spent serving as a church musician. Still others are familiar with his talents as a dedicated organ and piano teacher.
